Course Syllabus
  • Lesson 1: Get Up and Running with Photoshop

    • Explore the Adobe Bridge workspace: Content, Favorites, Folders, Filter, Metadata, and Preview panels
    • Use Bridge to browse, organize, and open image files; create and manage Collections and Smart Collections
    • Identify and navigate the Photoshop workspace: Application bar, Options bar, Tools panel, document window, and Status bar
    • Work with screen modes, zoom controls, and multiple open documents
    • Use keyboard shortcuts and Alt key combinations to cycle through tool groups
    • Customize the workspace using predefined layouts (Essentials, Photography, Graphic and Web, Painting) and the Preferences dialog
  • Lesson 2: Build Images from Scratch

    • Understand pixels, resolution (PPI), and how image size and resolution affect print and web output quality
    • Resize images using the Image Size dialog; compare resampling methods (Bicubic, Bicubic Smoother, Bicubic Sharper, Preserve Details)
    • Distinguish between raster and vector image types and understand when each is appropriate
    • Work with color modes: RGB, CMYK, Lab Color, Grayscale, Bitmap, Indexed Color, and Duotone
    • Apply graphic design principles: emphasis, movement, balance, unity, contrast, alignment, rule of thirds, proximity, and white space
    • Apply graphic design elements: line, color, texture, size, and typography considerations
    • Understand how digital cameras capture image data: image sensors, megapixels, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, focus, zoom, and flash
    • Identify camera shooting modes: Auto, Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, and Manual
  • Lesson 3: Select, Isolate, and Work with Layers

    • Use Marquee tools (Rectangular, Elliptical) to make geometric selections
    • Use Lasso tools (Freehand, Polygonal, Magnetic) for freeform and edge-snapping selections
    • Use Quick Selection tools (Object Selection, Quick Selection, Magic Wand) to select by color and brightness
    • Save, move, copy, cut, paste, and store selections in channels
    • Create, name, reorder, duplicate, merge, and delete layers in the Layers panel
    • Understand layer types and how layers interact to build composite images
  • Lesson 4: Fix, Enhance, and Retouch Images

    • Crop and straighten images using the Crop tool and Perspective Crop tool
    • Transform images: scale, rotate, and reposition image elements
    • Repair images using the Content Aware Move tool to relocate or extend image content seamlessly
    • Use the Patch tool to replace damaged or unwanted areas with sampled texture
    • Use the Clone Stamp tool to paint over imperfections using pixels sampled from elsewhere in the image
    • Understand and implement a color management workflow, including color profiles and output considerations for screen vs. print
  • Lesson 5: Polish and Refine Your Work

    • Apply non-destructive adjustment layers in Photoshop (Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, Brightness/Contrast, and others)
    • Understand the difference between destructive and non-destructive editing approaches
    • Open and process raw image files in Adobe Camera Raw
    • Refine tone, exposure, white balance, and detail using Camera Raw controls
    • Use advanced image refinement tools to fine-tune photographic images beyond basic adjustments
  • Lesson 6: Prepare and Export Files for Any Output

    • Import images from external sources and other Adobe applications into Photoshop
    • Export and organize files; use Bridge to manage folder structures and file metadata
    • Save images optimized for the web using appropriate formats and compression settings
    • Configure print options and prepare images for high-quality print output
    • Save files in formats compatible with other programs (Illustrator, InDesign, and others)
    • Understand when to use PSD, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and other common file formats
